Join us at the Schlossplatz for a protest action against the Stadtschloss on Saturday October 17 at 3pm.
We will have a jumping castle on site for you to play on - because the only good castle is a jumping castle! We will also have DJs playing some nice electro-techno music.
Come dressed as kings, queens or nobility. Bring signs to demonstrate your disapproval.

Why demonstrate?

- Because the Stadtschloss is unnecessary: We already have enough unused buildings in Berlin, so there's no need to build more. The institutions, museums and libraries that may eventually be housed in the Stadtschloss can easily be accommodated elsewhere in the city for much less money.
- It is a waste of money: Currently it is budgeted at half a billion euros, but we all know that public projects always cost more than their budgets. This, at a time when Berlin can't even afford a properly working S-Bahn system!
- The decision making process is corrupted: The competition to decide the architect was found to be improperly conducted. See here.
- It is a symbol of imperial power: The Stadtschloss was originally the palace of the Prussian kings and a symbol of their imperial power. It was then destroyed and replaced by the Palast Der Republik, a symbol of Soviet power. Now, a group of rich and (mostly) west Germans want to resurrect the old symbol of power there. Instead of this constant replacing of power symbols, we want to see an empty park, free of symbols.

What should be build there instead?

Nothing! The Stadtschloss should remain how it currently is - a picturesque empty green space for the citizens of the city to enjoy.

What should be done with the money?

Lots can be done with half a billion euros: Berlin doesn't have a properly working S-Bahn system. Many of its citizens are unemployed due to the lack of sustainable industries here. There is an endless list of projects that could be funded with this money. We don't claim to advocate on behalf of any alternative project, but wish simply to say that spending money on an unnecessary castle in the middle of a financial crisis is a stupid idea.

Sections of the Hedonist International support the Demonstration "Freedom not Fear" to protest against censorship, surveillance and police state. The demonstration takes place the 3rd time on September 12th and starts 3 p.m. at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. Last year there have been about 50.000 people, it was the biggest protest for civil liberties since years.

The Fuckparade - a demonstration for subcultural claims and rights - will be on the street again on August 22 this year. From a subcultural perspective, 2009 was dominated so far by an increasing awareness of how easily everybody's lifestyle can be negatively affected by a growing appetite of state institutions to control every aspect of life.Total surveillance, non-acceptance of alternative lifestyles via tightened budgets and higher living expenses, old fashioned 20th century regulations ignoring every change of modern communication and artistic expression (such as the GEMA) are just a few examples why subcultural people will once more join on the streets of Berlin to celebrate the 12th anniversary of the Fuckparade.

Demonstration Rights suspended

The economic crisis is showing its effects: the State is virtually
suspending our rights. Protests and protestors are faced with the
implications of the crisis. All over Europe repressions rise and
political forms of expression are being impeded. During the NATO summit
in Strasbourg the Schengen Accord was suspended; through the absurd
prohibitions on movement and banning of travel to the summit protest,
the capacity of people to voice their opinion was hindered. At the same
time, law enforcement has been clearly behaving as though it is
preparing itself for violence. This was evident at the conclusion of the
demonstration “we wont pay for your crisis” on the 28.03.09 in Berlin
through the unjust infringement of police forces on protestors. It was
also evident in a more extreme sense in London, during the recent G20
summit, where police attacked a man without provocation directly
resulting in his death.

Right now in Berlin the police won’t allow the MayDay parade to follow
the route we have proposed. During the meeting held to register the
parade, various delegates from the police force justified their decision
to MayDay organisers on the grounds of technical traffic aspects, along
with reasons of police resources. The key point of the route planned by
the Berlin MayDay alliance through the districts Mitte and
Friedrichshain/ Kreuzberg is Friedrichstrasse.
The police invoked the decision appointed by the administrative court to
the “we wont pay for your crisis” protest; namely that a demonstration
along Friedrichstrasse was banned due to technical traffic aspects. They
claimed that this was because of the potential dangers arising from the
numerous train station entrances along Friedrichstrasse and the bollard
on the footpaths. The splitting of the road into multiple lanes and thus
the inevitable splitting of the demonstration was also invoked by
police. According to the police, these given reasons equally apply to
Charlottenstrasse, the street running parallel to Friedrichstrasse.

With this decision comes the effective suspension of the basic
constitutional rights to demonstrate in the area of
Friedrichstr./Charlottenstr. This is particularly obvious when
considered in light of the fact that police did not seem to mind that
the demonstration on the 28.03.09 was lead through small streets,
populated with bollard around to Hackescher Markt outside and going
throug a residential zones. What can be concluded is that it is not
desirable for police to let demonstrations take place in those areas
where protest is taken seriously.

Legal avenues are being looked into, but we are relying on your support:
so come to the parade and be creative, because we are the protest on the
streets!

Here is the call for action (sorry, only in German):
‚Friedrichshain ist Nr.1 bei rechter Gewalt’ – Diese Nachricht erschreckte im März 2006 alle, die es noch nicht wussten. Empört und aufgebracht veranstaltete ein breites Bündnis aus Normalos und Freigeistern eine dicke Parade gegen den rechten Einfluss in ihrem Kiez. Mehr als 3000 Leute nahmen im März 2006 teil - noch einmal soviele waren es bei der zweiten Parade im September des gleichen Jahres.

Aber die braune Scheiße scheint kein Ende zu nehmen.

Heute, 3 Jahre später, scheint es, als ob sich nicht viel geändert hat. Die Tendenz der rechten Gewalttaten in Berlin ist nach wie vor steigend, Friedrichshain bildet die traurige Spitze!

Die Eröffnung eines weiteren Naziladens direkt am Bersarinplatz ist nur die Spitze des Eisbergs. Wenn solche Läden aufmachen, heißt das, dass es Kundschaft gibt, dass die örtlichen Behörden nix dagegen haben, dass diejenigen, die sich wehren wollen, sich schon lange nicht mehr trauen.

Das können und wollen wir nicht länger hinnehmen! Wir wollen allen, die sich gegen die Faschisten engagieren Mut machen und Ihnen zeigen, dass sie nicht alleine sind. Wir wollen uns gegenseitig ermutigen, diesen rechten Schlägern keinen Raum in unsere Mitte zu überlassen. Denn wir sind viele, wir sind bunt und wir werden es nicht zulassen, dass Faschisten unser tolerantes Miteinander mit ihrer gewalttätigen, menschenverachtenden Ideologie zerstören.
Dafür lohnt es sich auf die Straße zu gehen und sein Gesicht zu zeigen!

Deshalb:
Alle Beats und Bands, die Freaks und die Normalos, die Durchen und die Frischen, die Jungen und die Alten…Geht auf die Strasse und zeigt den Faschos, dass wir bunt, laut und verdammt viele sind!

Verkleidet euch, macht nen Wagen, Musik, Strassentheater, Tanzgruppen, Lesungen, Flötenkonzerte, irgendwas!

Achtet aufeinander, seid stark, haltet zusammen, los gehts! Seid kreativ, werdet aktiv, tut was!
